Stop the cuts to Mater holiday penalty rates

To: The management at Mater Hospital

We, the undersigned rely on our penalty rates. A cut to our penalty rates is a pay cut that we can't afford and don't deserve.

We are asking you to commit to protecting our penalty rates and enshrining fair rates in our collective agreement.

If people work on what is a public holiday for everyone else then they should receive financial recognition for this above normal rates of pay. Working on public holidays means you miss out on social events and occasions with family and friends which are important for individual, family and community emotional and mental wellbeing and connection. People need regular common times to get together and connect – that is what penalty rates protect. I strongly object to the removal of penalty rates for any one for any public holiday.

It is the staff who are rostered on the PH’s, that are being penalised. I give away my family interaction on these days, and all PH’s are important days in our society. As I have a set roster, most of my shifts fall on the PH’s, where other staff are not willing to comprise their day off. I and a few of my colleagues are in the same position of “Holding the Fort” when it counts.

Cutting penalty rates and professional development allowances will make it hard for The Mater to recruit good staff to our facility.
